{"id":969,"date":"2010-05-19T05:02:31","date_gmt":"2010-05-19T12:02:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenhopeessences.com\/wordpress\/?p=969"},"modified":"2010-05-19T05:03:21","modified_gmt":"2010-05-19T12:03:21","slug":"the-gardens-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.greenhopeessences.com\/?p=969","title":{"rendered":"The Gardens this Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Given the slug population explosion these last few years, this season in the vegetable, Red Shiso and Venus gardens we are forgoing our usual deep hay mulch to see if a scorched earth scenario breaks the slug cycle.  After twenty years of keeping everything covered with a deep layer of mulch hay, I find myself very uncomfortable with all this exposed earth.  I certainly hope it is making the slugs MORE uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenhopeessences.com\/wordpress\/wp-contents\/upload\/2010\/05\/img-1765.jpg\" height=\"449\" width=\"336\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" alt=\"IMG_1765.JPG\" title=\"IMG_1765.JPG\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here is Elizabeth building the center piece of this year&#8217;s main vegetable- a tent of Scarlet Runner Beans.  Note abundant exposed soil and tiny weeds demonstrating that without mulch,  it is going to be a long summer of weeding.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenhopeessences.com\/wordpress\/wp-contents\/upload\/2010\/05\/img-1763.jpg\" height=\"259\" width=\"345\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" alt=\"IMG_1763.JPG\" title=\"IMG_1763.JPG\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the Flowerbeds, the Tree Peonies are either about to open or just opening- <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenhopeessences.com\/wordpress\/wp-contents\/upload\/2010\/05\/img-1776.jpg\" height=\"311\" width=\"414\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" alt=\"IMG_1776.JPG\" title=\"IMG_1776.JPG\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Emily is back from a wonderful adventure in Sicily and we are all so happy she is<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenhopeessences.com\/wordpress\/wp-contents\/upload\/2010\/05\/img-1769.jpg\" height=\"388\" width=\"518\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" alt=\"IMG_1769.JPG\" title=\"IMG_1769.JPG\" \/><span style=\"font-size:0pt;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span>ready to take on all the bindweed in the perennial beds which are looking very lush right now.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenhopeessences.com\/wordpress\/wp-contents\/upload\/2010\/05\/img-1774.jpg\" height=\"345\" width=\"259\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" alt=\"IMG_1774.JPG\" title=\"IMG_1774.JPG\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The beautiful new cold frames built by Jim during his April &#8220;vacation&#8221; are chock a block full of baby plants, hardening off until the end of the month when they can be planted out.  The greenhouse also is teeming with baby plants and a lot of grumpy tropical plants who impatiently await their summer season outside after a long winter inside.<\/p>\n<p>It is SPRING and our cup runneth over!
